Food Inequality

The Women’s Inclusive Team’s Community Kitchen and foodbank service plays a vital role in addressing food inequality by providing free, hot meals to those in need. Originally launched during the COVID-19 pandemic as an emergency response, it has since become a permanent support system for vulnerable community members.

Over time, more than 300 dedicated volunteers have supported this initiative. These volunteers were instrumental in WIT winning the Queen’s Award for their outstanding contribution to the community and making a significant impact.

To help sustain the service, the Women’s Inclusive Team developed a project called Hooyo East, a Black-led Somali community food enterprise. This project offers the “Takeaway That Gives Back,” where each meal purchased helps fund the Community Kitchen and foodbank. It also provides employment opportunities for local women who might not have been able to secure jobs through traditional means.

In addition to takeaway meals, Hooyo East also offers professional catering services for a wide range of events, from private functions and corporate meetings to community festivals and celebrations. Whether you’re planning a business lunch or a large cultural event, our team can deliver delicious food with heart, while helping fund a meaningful cause.
